King of Pop 5 Years Gone!

The King of Pop died 5 years ago this month, here are 5 things you didn’t know!

Things have been just as turbulent in the death of Michael Jackson as it was during the life of the pop icon. June 25th will mark the 5 year anniversary of the passing of one of music’s most celebrated artist. Since then we have learned so many things about the man include financial issues that were a strain on him, criminal charges that nearly killed him, and failing health were key in the life and death of Michael Jackson.

Here are the 5 things that we have learned about Michael Jackson since his passing:
5. Michael Jackson was broke! How is it possible that a man who generated $1 Billion dollars in his lifetime be a billion dollars in debt at the time of his death? Reckless spending, In a new book titled “Remember the Time: Protecting Michael Jackson in His Final Days,” written by the King of Pop’s former staffers Javon Beard and Bill Whitfield. They detail of wild spending sprees, and vacations while at the same time have credit cards declined and not paying his employees on time. Now that the King has passed on the money is just being stacked away in the vaults of the Estate left to his Mother and Children.

4. Michael Jackson is still a major player in music: In March,2010 the Michael Jackson estate announced a 7 year 250 million dollar contract which among other things promised the release of new material. We saw a week start with the first posthumous album ‘Michael’ and in the last few weeks we have seen the 2nd Posthumous release go to #1 in more than 50 countries,#2 in the United States and even bring about the Michael Jackson hologram. Artist such as Justin Timberlake and Usher have lent a hand in the polishing up of some of Jacksons unfinished tracks.

3. Not even death can vindicate the King: No matter what there are still those awful allegations. Unfortunately there are still those out there who believe Michael Jackson to be a pedophile, a sexual deviant who victimized children by trapping them in his own theme park of manipulation. The New York Daily News as early as April of 2014 reports of a man who claimed Jackson molestation. One year ago we heard similar stories when famed choreographer wade Robson accused Jackson of abuse even after he said in open court in 2005 that nothing of the sort ever happened. The trial nearly killed him in 2005 and quite honestly did everything but prove Michael Jackson guilty of any improper contact with children.

2. Michael Jackson was sick: If you were not aware Michael looked a little different? What you may have not known or believed is that Michael Jackson suffered from vitiligo. A serious skin condition that effects African Americans by taking away the pigment or color of their skin. That’s not all, Michael Jackson suffered from neurological issues stemming from a burn while filming a commercial for Pepsi, he had lupus which swelled his lungs and organs, and he had a back ailment from to incident that occurred while performing on stage. The you can throw the anti-depressants, and skin cancer into the mix and you find out that Jackson was heavily medicated, due to being sick. At the end of his life when asked why he signed on to do 50 concerts he said “I am still young enough to do it and my children are old enough to see me do it”.

1. Michael and romance: In a new book titled “Remember the Time” released this summer written by Michael Jacksons former body guards they claim something that most never really could believe. They claim Jackson not only had 1 but 2 love interest. They detail of the excitement that would rush over their former boss when either “Friend” or his favorite lady “Flower” would come into town. They talk over lavish shopping sprees, and late night trips to hotels after his kids fallen asleep. Apparently the King of Pop was the King of Romance as well.

Not ‘Toy Story’ but ‘Toy Stories’

In the Toy Story Trilogy you will be shocked by what you didn’t know you were seeing..

I will never forget the first time I saw Toy Story in theaters. The Lion King and Aladdin already blew my mind, but Toy Story was when I myself a child at the time realized that this was the future. When the sequel came out I was happy to meet Jessie the Cowgirl and Bulls eye Woody’s horse. We also discovered that Woody wasn’t just any ordinary Doll, Woody was an Icon. But if you caught the yard sale scene in Toy Story 2, you will hear Andy’s Mom challenge the very fact that Woody was in the pile of junk by saying “Its an old family air loom”.

As someone who would someday like to create and animated motion picture, the way that these folks come up with an amazing tale like Toy Story and any of the movies tied to the trilogy is pretty mind boggling. But is it possible that Andy’s Mom is the coincidental previous owner of Andy’s Jessie Doll? True, we don’t know much about Jessie’s original owner, but in a song and montage given by Jessie in the sequel she tells of a time when she once had someone to love her as Woody had Andy, her name was “Emily”. Emily grew up , she gave Jessie away never to re enter her life again. But is it really that open and close? Of course not.

We are all too familiar with Disney and we have all heard the rumors, and with the growth of the internet and blogs like this one the theories have only grown and gained in momentum. But honestly finding out that the women who threw the birthday party, who then purchased Buzz, then took her son to Pizza Planet where the adventure of Toy Story begins this women is actually more. The story of Toy Story is not just what’s on the surface but what is in the background too. I wont lie. I too was one of those 18 year olders in the movies holding back tears at the idea that these toys were about to be mangled while holding one another’s hands, but this helps me appreciate the story so much more. If it actually is the case.

What’s amazing is that people actually had time to figure something like this out, but what’s most amazing is that the ladies and gentleman at Pixar created this full reality. Although they never actually offered to us the human aspect of the Story but they gave us just enough knowing that with the love we would have for these characters and toys would be able to piece this all together. Its no surprise to me really, in a way I feel like woody, Buzz, Slink and the rest of the gang are kind of my Toys too, and Its feels good to know a little bit more about the family who cared for them.

The Chicago Silver Line… Cta Exclusive

With all the the horror stories about the most easily accessible public transit in the World, a silver lining is always appreciated

The 3rd coldest winter in Chicago history is literally days away from officially being over, and for someone like me who does rely on the daily commute via the public transit this very exciting news. This past December I found myself always saying “this is the last winter using the transit system”, and this was for more then just the weather. The smell, the over crowding, and of course the violence as well make the experience of using the transit pretty remarkable for a city and system where so many millions do rely on the Cta as a main source of transport in just a day. Not being over dramatic, but by riding the bus or train, you do place yourself in a very vulnerable position although personally I have yet to encounter a problem. (Yet)

Last October after completing a 10 hour shift mainly on my feet, I boarded the Brown Line heading into the Loop to find a drunken French gentleman asking people for help with no success, I decided to take matters into my hand and lend the drunken gentlemen the assistance he needed. Upon separation I handed this fellow my business card and asked if he could call me in the morning to be sure he was safe, he said he would and thanked me. I wrote this man off thinking that he would be to drunk to remember me let alone the card that I handed to him, but at 9AM the next morning I got a call from the man in a much deeper, and clearer French accent thanking me for my help and wishing me well. I have yet to hear from him again.

Another story occurred a bit more recently and of course has something to do with valentines day, which for someone who is bitter and single, and bitter about being single has got to be the worst day whether we let other know it or not. On the way to train this last February, 14th I had internally of course been talking myself into a better mood and wrote off the day as “whatever”. I boarded on the Montrose Brown Line stop, while waiting the few minutes until the next train I got my first human interaction of my day even though I had been up for hours until that point. “Happy Valentines Day friend”, is what this lady said to me while handing me a valentines. Speechless yes at first, I went on to find out that this women had 300 of these cards made and she had gained the idea from a women who had did the same in the city of New York. When asked “why” she simply replied in her light kind voice “for some of us this day is hard, we all see people getting gifts from others and some of us don’t even get a hello”. Wow! Emma, which was her name definitely changed my attitude about that day. More than that, she changed my view on my life even if only for a second. I wish I could thank her again.
This is the back of Emma's V-Day card.

This is the back of Emma’s V-Day card.

Just this morning. While on the Red Line going into the tunnels beneath the city of Chicago, a video I had been watching via YouTube cut off due to a loss of signal I screamed out a curse. Suddenly a man next to me asked what the video I had been watching was, I immediately wanted to ignore him but not what the heck? Not this time, I decided to speak. Now let me be the first to say I am not a religious person, this does not make me a bad person but it does make me avoid conversing about religion but this is exactly where the conversation went. Instead of challenging the things that this man was trying to tell me, I asked questions. (Perhaps questions that I already knew the answer too?) He seemed surprise by my deep knowledge of history as well a religious matters. The thing about this whole exchange was that this man guessed what I do for a living, he also gave me his name “Elazar” which I had never heard of before this morning. Upon further research I found out that it means “God has helped”. I had to cut the conversing a little short but I got up came here and wrote this.

Why did I share this with you? Why did you continue reading? Silver linings like these that make all the dangers, drama, and heart aches of the transit and basically everyday life worth it. Its good to experience being human, its good to have general human contact. If I had just read what was on my phone screen, or put in 2 ear buds besides 1 maybe these stories would not be able to be fully enjoyed or even shared. You can take that to the bank.

Mr. Manny takes an improv course

Mr. Manny takes an improv course…..

I will admit, I actually had to pay in order to perform on a stage at Second City Training Center. Not just any Second City, the Chicago Training Center who gave us many greats, both past and present. By the time I started my journey at the historic training center I had already learned many facts about the theater and how important of a role that it has played in modern day Pop culture, by doing this I was also stricken with the realization that this place had inadvertently changed my life already. True and tough to say, as a kid growing up myself, my brothers, and my sisters did not have much to laugh about. When we watched Tommy Boy staring Chris Fairly along with the comical David Spade or Billy Madison staring the awesomely great Adam Sandler I had not been curious enough to gain this knowledge nor the home setting to discover this fact for another 15 years.

“Saturday Morning”

“I knew it could change my life, I didnt know that it would”

The first time I ever felt “excepted” in a room was the Second City training center. My level A class had about 21 of some of the coolest, most open minded people I met. I’m sure no matter what the personal opinion of these people are of their self and of myself, it will forever be a fact that we share something special. We share improv. Our personal journey to discovering our inner voice. In my time here I gained the pleasure of meeting some wonderful (or not so wonderful) folks to be my instructor. Judy FabJance among the greats, (just a shot out to a women who introduced me to comedy) J.J Howe I will never forget taught me more about myself then 22 years of life before, silly as it seems. Makes a man appreciate how powerful and genuinely deep the mind truly is, improv that is and if your reading this and thinking abut it. Do it.

My Perfect Job…

The perfect job for me…

The prefect job for me? Something I have always hated to answer as well as something I especially hate to have asked to me.

I’m guessing that an ideal job would have to be performing comedy. It takes a lot of work to start a dream like this, let alone continue and maintain a career in such a crazy field. I have been writing stand up with the assistance of the Comedy Bible, written by Judy Carter and I feel as if I finally prepared. Writing is your best friend, this is true in almost every aspect of life. If one chooses to deny himself of this certainty thats fine, allow ignorance to be the happiness that is received, not the rewards of success that can be gained if one is to assimilate to writing stand up. To clearly understand how one believes and most importantly how to clearly communicate how one believes, for this skill I received instruction from the Second City training center the Worlds largest Comedy Training facility located in Chicago. Staying strong, determined, and focused is important and I intend on climbing to the top.

Manny’s Goals

I guess we all really want the same thing, right? A better job. I entered this program here at ICB so that I may have to opportunity to brush up on public speaking, social media, and production skills because to put it simply I did not have the appropriate skills to become successful in entertainment. In 10 years I see myself as a successful and paid personality. Comedy, radio, and maybe even television sounds good to me.
